“Latin American Ports, between Globalization and Protectionism”

The new political map of the US and the EU and its short and mid-term implications on the international commercial relations and the value chains: How far does this generate a debate between developing a globalization process against an alternative resurgence of protectionism?

For the moment, this implies a new challenge for the logistic chains and the ports in particular. Latin America is immersed in this modern times’ issue that can also take advantage from by focusing in a more intraregional trade.

At the same time, there are changes in the strategies of the shipping companies, with regard to alliances and mergers and a new wave of acquisitions that generate -for example- more concentration in the containerization business. Against this backdrop, ports must respond with better services, competitive prices and sustainability.
